Kids at The Shelf: Wonder Struck by Brian Selznick

Kids at The Shelf is a NEW feature at The Sweet Bookshelf.  It is a place for our very own group of kids to review books from their points of view! See what they actually have to say about the books!

Morgan, 14 yrs old

I am the one on the far left. We are dressed as the characters from the book Wings by Aprilynne Pike.

Hi! I am Morgan and I like to read, fish and play video games. Another pastime is to drive my mom crazy asking her to let me drive the car. Since I don't yet have a license, that will not happen for a long time. My top five authors are: Tamora Pierce, John Flanagan, Hilari Bell, Shel Silverstein, and Brandon Mull. I dream about writing a book and have many ideas for stories. My head is filled with them and I'm trying to write them all down. Back up future job? I'll be a librarian. As long as it involves lots of books!

Wonder Struck by Brian Selznick
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Reading Level: Young Adult
Rating: 5/5

Ben and Rose secretly wish their lives were different. Ben longs for the father he has never known. Rose dreams of a mysterious actress whose life she chronicles in a scrapbook. When Ben discovers a puzzling clue in his mother's room and Rose reads an enticing headline in the newspaper, both children set out alone on desperate quests to find what they are missing.

Review:
Oh, I love this book! In fact, it left me Wonder Struck. Mr. Selznick takes us back and forth between two different times to tell us the stories of Ben and Rose. Uniquely, Ben's story is told through text and Rose's with illustrations. Rose and Ben are the most realistic characters I have ever seen or read about and I wish I could go into [the] book and meet them. This book will have readers of all ages enthralled. I enjoyed the way he ended it as much as I loved starting it.
