Discussion: Do You Judge a Book By Its Cover?

Do you judge a book by its cover? I know I sure do. I can't help it. It is the first thing I see, it's the deciding factor whether I actually read the title, pick it up and read the summary, etc.

One of my favorite things
to do is to go into the book store and just look at all the colors in the books. I'm not searching for anything in particular, I'm just letting the books call to me. I know I sound like a nut...but seriously, all those wonderful books, I can feel them calling to me with their stories. Luring me into their worlds. It's great!! I will just run my fingers over their covers until one feel right, i.e. has the right look.

The colors, pictures, font, it all matters. But why? Why is it so important? Can it make or break the success of a book?

What do YOU think?

  1. Yeah, I judge books by their covers. It's usually when I haven't heard about a book at all, though. If I've heard great things about a book, I'm more willing to overlook a not-so-great cover.

  2. I definitely judge a book by its cover. Especially when it comes to childrens books! I've bought books because their covers (or illustrations) are cute and then find out the book was more or less horrible... So even though I do this, I shouldn't always rely on it.

  3. I hear you - I do that too! That's the way it happens for me when I'm just browsing. For that reason I think marketers weild great power when deciding what covers to use for books. If I've read a great review of a book that has an unappealing cover, it doesn't stop me searching for that specific book and buying it though...

  4. Whao! I do the same thing in bookstores and the library all the time.

When I am not looking for something in particular, I let the names and colors guide me.

  5. I <3 covers. Covers are what grab me first.

I don't let a bad cover keep me from a book though. I love when a book surprises me by surpassing its cover.

  6. I agree. I don't let a bad cover deter me from a good summary and recommendation, but if I am searching for something new I'll go by the cover to grab me first.

I know, from personal experience, that it has a lot to do with how successful the book is. I have so many books with pretty covers! I can't help but buy them!

  7. I know we shouldn't judge a book by its cover but, god, it's so hard. A cover can really make or break a book in my opinion. I've seen some pretty hideous covers for books I've enjoyed and known that if I'd seen that cover on it at the time, I wouldn't have looked twice.

  8. Fracutred Fairy tale books? I totally let the covers influence me!

  9. I partially judge a book by its cover. There are certain covers that from past experience now scream at me, "Don't pick me up!" And there are certain books that I'll pick up because it's similar to another book that I've loved. But I try not to let it sway me most of the time and at least read a synopsis.

  10. I do judge by the cover. I pick the pretty ones unless I've heard good things about the book.
But I love having pretty covers on my shelf xD
